Joanna Marshall

Communications Strategist

Joanna oversees Planet Women’s communications strategy and supports the organization’s efforts to cultivate future women leaders in the environmental movement. She was part of Planet Women’s early start-up journey, building their initial fundraising and marketing team and helping raise more than $6.7 million in the first four years. Now, she works part-time and lives with her husband and son in Oxford, UK.

Joanna combines her journalism experience, people skills, and natural curiosity to get to the heart of complicated conservation and social issues and bring scientific work to life in a way that motivates people to take action. Previously, Joanna worked at The Nature Conservancy in California for six years, where she led donor communications, marketing and branding.

She has an MA in journalism from New York University and a BA in comparative literature and environmental studies from University of Southern California. In her free time, she practices with her teachers at the San Francisco Zen Center. She gratefully received lay ordination in November 2023, joining Suzuki Roshi’s lineage. She loves the smell of bay laurel trees and damp earth; enjoys being out of service, on the trail and sleeping under the stars; and insists on reading funny books/essays/articles aloud to anyone who will listen and many who don’t.
